<image:title>Blog - The Rise of Lasers in Woodworking—Yes, Fricken Lasers - I recently joined the club with the xTool M1, and the experience has been a blend of excitement, frustration, fascination, and smoke! But those late-night breakthrough moments that pull you back into the shed after dinner to try “just one more” design.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s slower than a CO₂ laser, and the learning curve is definitely steeper than I expected, but once you push past that early “why won’t this work?” stage, it becomes an incredible addition to the workshop. Realistically, the M1 cuts up to about 3 mm reliably, and burning can be an issue, abit of masking tape and a quick upgrade to the VEVOR Solder Fume Extractor, (which I bought in December 2025 for around $250 AUD), I’ve dramatically reduced scorch marks and improved the overall cutting quality. Also that stink of smoke is essentially gone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Quiet Comeback of Hand Tools in Modern Woodworking - Another factor is the dust reduction. Power sanders and routers throw fine particles into the air, coating every surface and lingering long after the work is done. In contrast, hand tools produce shavings tight curls and tactile, and easy to sweep up. For small backyard workshops or a corner of the garage, this difference is substantial. It makes woodworking more accessible for those with limited space, shared living environments, or a preference for a cleaner workspace with fewer health concerns.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why a Properly Tuned Chip Breaker Makes All the Difference - The primary role of the chip breaker is to influence how shavings curl and fracture as they leave the cutting edge. By interrupting and redirecting the shaving before it has a chance to lift and split the fibres ahead of the blade, the chip breaker dramatically reduces tear-out especially in reversing grain and difficult timbers. But this only works if the breaker is tuned with precision. A gap, poorly polished underside, or incorrect angle will compromise performance and leave the plane prone to chatter, clogging, or inconsistent cutting behaviour.</image:title>
<image:caption>A properly fitted chip breaker starts with contact. The leading edge must meet the back of the blade with a light-tight seal. Even the smallest opening at this interface creates a pocket where shavings catch, building up until the plane stutters or jams. By carefully flattening and polishing the underside of the breaker’s leading edge, and ensuring it mates tightly to the iron, you eliminate these problems and create a shaving path that stays consistent and reliable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Stanley Type 11 Hand Plane: A Benchmark Hand Tool. - What sets the Type 11 apart begins with its design refinements.</image:title>
<image:caption>This was the period when Stanley was actively improving both ergonomics and mechanical performance. The most immediately recognisable feature is the tall, elegant front knob, replacing the earlier squat style. This seemingly small change dramatically improved comfort and control, especially during long planing sessions. Combined with the rear tote’s classic, flowing shape, the Type 11 feels balanced in the hand substantial, but not cumbersome.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Stanley Type 11 Hand Plane: A Benchmark Hand Tool. - The castings from this era are another highlight. Stanley’s quality control during the Type 11 period was exemplary, resulting in planes that, even today, flatten readily and remain dimensionally stable after more than a century. Many users note that Type 11 castings seem denser and more consistent than those produced in later decades, contributing to a smoother feel in use and reduced chatter under demanding conditions.</image:title>
